Melkveebedrijf van Leeuwen
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
Melkveebedrijf van Leeuwen is a dairy farm on the Drieëndijk in Heenvliet, on Voorne-Putten, where the Van Leeuwen family keeps 130 dairy cows and 40 sheep and sells the milk unprocessed from a vending machine.
The milk is sold raw, so its enzymes and bacteria are left intact. Next to the milk tap a cheese vending machine sells five ages of cheese from young to old plus a 30+ cheese; their website does not say whether the cheese is made from the farm's own milk. From April to October there is also farm ice cream, made on the farm by All about Chocolate from the farm's pasteurised milk. The cows graze in the meadows along the Drieëndijk as soon as the weather allows.
Everything is self-service at Drieëndijk 15, with no delivery. The milk tap is open every day from 7:00 to 19:00 and takes coins only; bring a bottle, bucket or jug or buy a one-litre glass bottle there. The cheese machine takes contactless payment or cash, and the ice cream is sold on trust, paid into a cash box or by banking app or QR code.
Besides grass, the cows eat a ration the farm mixes itself from by-products not fit for human consumption: brewers' grains, citrus peel, soy and rapeseed meal and wheat yeast concentrate from biofuel production.
