Kaasboerderij Verweij is a dairy and cheese farm on the Zuidzijdseweg in Polsbroek, run since 1977 by one family, now three brothers and their wives with about ten staff, where the milk of their own 400 cows is made into farm cheese every day.
In fine weather the cows go out during the day and are moved to a fresh plot of pasture every day; in very hot weather or heavy rain they stay in the barn, where they get mixed feed from an automatic system. The family harvests its own grass and maize for the feed. Their website says the cheese is made from cow's milk, Jersey milk and goat's milk, in sizes from one to thirty kilos and with up to forty different herbs; whether the goat's milk comes from their own animals isn't stated. The business is registered with SKAL for processing and selling organic products, which we found in the register, but their website doesn't say which of the cheeses this covers.
The farm shop is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 18:00 and closed on Sunday, with a different cheese of the week on offer.
The cows are milked twice a day, at 5:00 and 16:00, in a parlour where each cow is cleaned by hand before milking.
