Zorgboerderij Makandra 's Heeren Loo
- No synthetic pesticides or fertiliser (certified)
Boerderij Makandra is a care farm of 's Heeren Loo on Landgoed Kernhem, on the edge of Ede about two kilometres from the centre, where people with intellectual disabilities, psychiatric conditions or acquired brain injury grow and make the produce sold in its farm shop.
The estate has vegetable, herb, flower and berry gardens, a vegetable greenhouse and an orchard, and laying hens and calves are kept there too. The participants look after the animals and tend the vegetable garden, berry bushes and fruit trees, and what they harvest and process is sold in the shop. Makandra is certified organic (SKAL); we found it in the register under the foundation's name at this address. Exactly which vegetables, fruit, mushrooms and preserves are in the shop at a given time isn't listed.
The farm shop is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:45 and on Saturdays from 10:00 to 12:30, but closed on Saturdays from 1 January to 1 April and on public holidays, including 5 May. The produce also goes to the organic market in Utrecht, to several organic shops and restaurants, and to Het Hart. There is a bus stop 200 metres from the farm.
The mushrooms come from a wood on the estate set aside for growing them.
