Beeserious
BeeSerious is a bee-breeding foundation at Nieuwsticht 10 in Schiedam that breeds honeybees for health and resistance and sells the honey from its own colonies to pay for that work.
The honey comes directly from the foundation's own bees and is sold in 450-gram glass jars, with the origin of each batch stated on the label; where the hives stand is not said on their website, so the label is the only guide to where a jar was gathered. The breeding programme selects for strong colonies with particular traits, with the varroa mite, a parasite that multiplies in honeybee brood, as the main threat it works against, and what the honey earns goes back into raising vital, resistant colonies. The same address houses Serious Bee Distillers, which makes mead from the honey to its own recipe; that falls outside this guide.
The honey is sold through their webshop, and Nieuwsticht 10 is given as a visiting address, although their website does not say whether honey can be bought at the door or when. Companies, families and groups of friends can also adopt a colony, which funds the breeding directly.
The foundation is a registered public-benefit organisation (ANBI), so the honey exists to fund the bees rather than the bees to make honey.
