Koninklijke Schmidt Zeevis Rotterdam

Koninklijke Schmidt Zeevis is a fish wholesaler with a shop on the Matlingeweg in Rotterdam's Spaanse Polder, and the fish we checked there are its Zeeland mussels and its yellowtail kingfish farmed in Zeeland.

The bottom-culture mussels are grown near Yerseke in the Oosterschelde and come in several sizes, and bouchot mussels are sold alongside them. The Dutch Yellowtail Kingfish is farmed in Zeeland and sold as fillet. The rest of the range, more than 133 species a day bought at Dutch and foreign fish auctions from boats using flyshoot, twin-rig, gillnets and lines, gives no origin or method per species, so we haven't checked it. Every fish that comes in is barcoded and scanned so it can be traced from the boat to the kitchen, and it is scaled, filleted and portioned by hand.

The shop is open until 17:00 and has a lunch and oyster bar. Their webshop delivers anywhere in the Netherlands above a minimum order, with next-day delivery for orders placed before 12:00, and orders can also be collected at the shop.

The company holds MSC chain-of-custody certification, according to their website, which lets it sell fish from MSC-certified fisheries under the label, among them maatjes herring from the Astrid Fiske North Sea Herring fishery.
