Boerenmart
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
- Regenerative farming
Boerenmart is a beef farm in the Duifpolder near Maasland, in the peat meadows of Midden-Delfland, where a herd of Red and Black Angus cattle has grazed since April 2019 and the beef is sold directly to customers.
The cattle eat only grass and herbs from the farm's own herb-rich meadows, so the beef is 100% grass-fed; part of the summer grass is stored to feed them in the barn over winter, and mineral lick stones cover what the grass doesn't. They are strip-grazed, moved onto a fresh piece of long grass every time, and stay out day and night for seven months of the year. At around two and a half to three years old they go two to a trailer to Ter Weele, a small family slaughterhouse, where they rest overnight in a straw pen before slaughter. The farm sells one whole animal, head to tail, before the next is slaughtered. The webshop also lists honey, which we couldn't trace to its source.
The beef is sold through the webshop and on the farm's stall at the Rotterdamse Oogstmarkt every Saturday.
The farm takes part in the Weidevogelpact Midden-Delfland, so in the breeding months a large part of the meadow is left with long grass for godwits, redshanks, lapwings and oystercatchers to nest in.
