De Vlijt, Wageningen
- No synthetic pesticides or fertiliser (certified)
De Vlijt is a working windmill on the Harnjesweg in Wageningen, built in 1879 and grinding professionally again since 1979, where a team of six mills mainly Dutch-grown grain for bakeries, shops and home bakers.
The wheat and spelt are grown for the mill by Ekoboerderij De Lingehof in Hemmen, the rye on the Wageningse Eng, and the barley and oats come from Groningen. From these come wholemeal and white flours, flakes, groats and bran, alongside einkorn, emmer, buckwheat, kamut and teff flours, bread and cake mixes, and a rye sourdough starter. Their website says the mill works mainly with organic grain and has been certified for organic production since 1981; it is certified organic (SKAL), and we found it in the register. A smaller non-organic range is sold separately, so the price list is split in two.
The mill shop on the ground floor stocks more than 200 flour and regional products, including pulses, seeds, dried fruit and honey, and is open Thursday and Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00. Orders can also be placed by email and are sent by post within the Netherlands, up to 25 kg per parcel. On Saturdays the mill itself can be visited.
The mill grinds with wind power, and much of its grain comes from named Dutch farms the miller works with directly, from field to bakery.
