Groenhartig
- Organic methods: no synthetic pesticides or fertiliser, not certified
Groenhartig is an urban market garden in Amsterdam Nieuw-West that has grown salads, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, microgreens and soft fruit since 2017, at first mainly for the city's chefs and now also for weekly boxes.
Over a season they grow between 60 and 90 different crops, from salad mixes, carrots and beetroot to crosnes, tomatillos and citrus-scented marigolds. The soil is fed only with natural organic fertilisers, and no synthetic pesticides, fungicides or herbicides are used; the work is done mostly by hand. They hold no organic certificate and say so on their website, inviting customers to come and look instead; what qualifies the garden here is the way it is grown. The boxes are topped up with fruit, mushrooms, herbs and vegetables from other ecological growers nearby, not yet confirmed.
The vegetable subscription runs for 32 weeks from the end of April, one box a week, and one-off boxes can be ordered at any time. Boxes are collected on Friday, and at some points on Saturday, at Olives & More on the Overtoom, Café Modern in Noord, Café Remouillage in the Rivierenbuurt, Laing's Nekstraat in Oost, or at the garden itself on Fridays from 12:00 to 18:00; each pickup point has a WhatsApp group that tells you when the boxes have arrived.
Flowering and edible hedges around the beds house predatory insects and wild bees, which pollinate the crops and keep pests down.
