- Heritage breeds
IJsboerderij Vernooij is a dairy farm of 21 hectares on the Barwoutswaarder in Woerden, where about 75 cows are milked and their milk is made into farm ice cream.
The herd is closed, so all the young stock is raised on the farm, and the cows go out as soon as the weather and the land allow; the milk is sold as weidemelk, which means the cows are outside at least 120 days a year. The ice cream is made in the old byre of the farmhouse from the farm's own fresh milk, which is pasteurised first, and has been made there since 2012. Besides tubs of scooped ice cream they make ice-cream cakes, lollies, cupcakes and bonbons.
You can buy the ice cream at the farm and at their own ice-cream parlour, Het IJSLokaal, on the Kerkweg in Driebruggen. Through their webshop you can order half-litre and one-litre tubs or ice-cream cakes and collect them at either place, paying on collection. In good weather they also sell at the Saturday Streekmarkt in Woerden, and the ice cream is on the menu of several restaurants in the region.
The farm has been a dairy since the early 1900s, and cheese was once made here as well.
