Jan's Fruitschuur
Jan's Fruitschuur is the farm shop of an 11-hectare apple and pear orchard on the river clay of the Kromme Rijn at the edge of Zeist, run by the Van der Grift family since 1917 and now in its fourth generation.
The fruit is picked when the flavour is at its best, starting with Delcorf in August, then Cox's, Elstar, Gala and Jonagold, with Triomphe de Vienne, Doyenné du Comice and Conference pears; their website calls the growing environmentally friendly without naming a method, so the fresh fruit isn't included under the no-spray filters. Juice is pressed from their own fruit, and the honey comes from their own beekeeper. 1.5 hectares are planted with Redlove, a red-fleshed apple, and the less perfect ones become red cider, apple sauce and juice. The shop also sells seasonal vegetables, regional potatoes, citrus, dried fruit and nuts, barn eggs (scharreleieren), boerenkaas (farm cheese), jam and appelstroop (apple syrup), whose sourcing isn't yet confirmed.
The shop opens every Saturday from 8:30 to 17:00. From Monday to Saturday a fruit cart stands at the crossing of Tiendweg and Bunsinglaan with two- and five-kilo bags of apples and pears.
The red-fleshed Redlove trees have red trunks, red leaves and bright pink blossom.
