Kalkoen van de Boer
- Pigs and poultry live free range: outdoors on pasture, in woodland or a run
Kalkoen van de Boer is the Christmas turkey sale of Plattelandwinkel De Achterdijk, the farm shop of a 30-hectare fruit farm on the Achterdijk in Bunnik.
The turkeys are a black breed, and their website says they grow up with roomy indoor and outdoor housing and have had herb-rich grass to eat. They are sold fresh and never frozen, cleaned and ready to cook, as whole birds of about 4 to 10 kilos, and there is also a ready turkey roll of breast filled with turkey mince and wrapped in bacon from Livar pigs. The shop's own meat page lists the turkey among meat bought from partner farms, so the birds are raised on another farm, which isn't named, and what they are fed besides grass is not yet confirmed.
You order a turkey through the webshop with a deposit, and the final price follows the bird's actual weight. Collection is on 23 or 24 December at the farm's Christmas drive-in, where the order is loaded into your car, and orders can be cancelled up to 19 December. The farm shop itself is open on Friday and Saturday from 9:30 to 17:00.
The farm's own pears, apples, cherries, plums and strawberries are sold in the same shop and from a fruit vending machine on the Achterdijk.
