Knedo Stables
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
Knedo Stables is a small farm on the Noorderweg in Wijdewormer that breeds Verbeterd Roodbont and Belgian Blue beef cattle and sells the meat frozen from its own yard and webshop.
Verbeterd Roodbont is, their website explains, the only beef breed of Dutch origin, and the farm crosses it with Belgian Blue. Calves suckle their mothers and go out to the meadows in herds as soon as the spring weather allows, stay out through the grazing season and winter in a straw-bedded barn; what the cattle eat besides grass, in winter especially, is not stated. Slaughter is by Ter Weele, a self-slaughtering master butcher, and the meat is vacuum-packed and deep-frozen straight after cutting. A small flock of sheep helps manage the grassland and gives lamb, and each year three or four piglets are bought in and raised in a straw barn with an outdoor run; whether that run is open ground is not confirmed, so the pork is listed as unconfirmed, as are the veal and the chicken bought in from fellow farmer Jandlis.
Orders are placed through the webshop and collected at Noorderweg 110 on Wednesday and Thursday from 17:00 to 19:00 and on Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00, or by appointment.
The cattle, pigs and sheep are fed brewers' grains, the spent grain left over from brewing at Brouwerij de Hoop in Zaandijk.
