Moestuin de Haar
- Organic methods: no synthetic pesticides or fertiliser, not certified
Moestuin de Haar is a self-harvest garden of 1.5 hectares on the old kitchen-garden grounds of Kasteel de Haar near Haarzuilens, where growers, interns and volunteers raise vegetables, flowers, soft fruit and herbs for members who come to pick their own each week.
The garden follows the principles of organic farming (biologisch) but holds no organic certificate; according to their website no synthetic fertiliser or pesticides are needed, because the garden supports biodiversity and grows with the seasons. The soil is fed with compost, crops are rotated so that annual crops don't return to the same bed year after year, and crops that improve soil structure are sown in between. The work is done with a small tractor and hand tools, which keeps pressure on the soil low.
Members buy a harvest share (oogstaandeel) at the start of the year, which pays for seed, plants and upkeep, and then harvest weekly during visiting hours: Monday and Saturday from 10:00 to 15:00, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 to 17:00. The garden also holds harvest festivals and workshops.
The garden was laid out again on the castle's historic production grounds by a foundation set up in 2018, and the first harvest, in 2020, sold out.
