Molen Rijn en Lek
Molen Rijn en Lek is a working windmill in the centre of Wijk bij Duurstede, the only mill in the Netherlands built on top of a city gate, where a team of volunteer millers still grinds grain into flour.
The mill shop sells wholemeal wheat flour, rye flour, spelt flour and white spelt flour, white wheat flour, a multigrain flour of wheat, spelt, rye and oats called the Heuvelrug mix, and flour from Utrechtse blauwe, an emmer wheat. Alongside these there are pancake, cake and spiced-cake mixes, durum pasta flour and semolina, and dried yeast; which of these are milled at the mill itself we haven't confirmed.
The mill and shop are open on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from 12:30 to 16:00, when the volunteers also show visitors round, and outside those hours the flour is sold at Dé Notenwinkel on the Veldpoortstraat in Wijk bij Duurstede. Guided tours for groups can be booked by email. The lunch café De Graanschuur, in the old granary next to the mill, uses the mill's flour in many of its dishes.
The mill is owned by the Vereniging De Hollandsche Molen, which took it over in 1929 when it was at risk of demolition.
