Natuurlijk heel leuk
Natuurlijk heel leuk is a not-for-profit social enterprise in Wijk bij Duurstede that runs the Wijkse Voedselbos, a food forest of 1.5 hectares on the banks of the Kromme Rijn designed on permaculture principles.
The food forest is planted in a seven-layer structure, with native plants given room along the river and an edible garden of plants and herbs from Roman and Viking times. Volunteers do the planting, harvesting and pruning and look after the sheep. Their website says the enterprise sells products made from what grows in its own garden or in the wild, but doesn't name them, so none are confirmed yet.
Since 1 January 2026 Natuurlijk heel leuk has also run De Wijkse Moestuin, the community market garden in the same town, and buying produce goes through that membership: members (oogstgenoten) harvest vegetables, flowers and small fruit themselves each week or collect them as a box. Tours of the food forest can be booked through their website.
The planting draws on the history of the ground it stands on, which is why the edible garden holds species the Romans and Vikings would have known.
