voortwyk farm & food
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
- Nature-inclusive farming
- Cover crops
Voortwyk is a beef farm with a farm shop on the Zandpad in Breukelen, on the Vecht, raising Lakenvelder and Black Angus cattle on grass and farming with compost, cover crops and soil life at the centre of what it does.
The cattle are grass-fed: they go out in spring once the soil reaches 7°C, come in when the autumn rains set in, and spend the winter on a deep bed of wood chips, straw and leaves, eating hay rather than silage. The shop sells the whole animal, from rib-eye and picanha to brisket, oxtail, tongue, liver and bones for broth. The farm also sells chicken raised in the meadow (fresh on Saturdays from mid-April to the end of October), meadow eggs and pork from Landvarken × Duroc pigs, not yet confirmed.
The farm shop is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00. On other days you can send a WhatsApp message before 17:00 and have your order delivered between 18:00 and 19:00 the same evening in Breukelen, Nieuwersluis and Loenen aan de Vecht. All meat is vacuum-packed at the butcher and kept frozen.
When the cows go out in spring, the pigs move into the barn and root through the bedding for maize hidden at the bottom, turning the manure into compost for the fields within about six weeks.
