Bunkerhoning.nl
Bunkerhoning is a two-person apiary in Leusden whose hives stand in the countryside along the Grebbelinie, the historic line of defence that runs through the municipality, and whose honey is sold only in Leusden itself.
The honey comes from their own colonies. The bees build their own comb and, according to their website, come into hardly any contact with pesticides, and only part of the honey is harvested, so the colonies keep enough of their own stores for the winter. There are two harvests, a spring honey from April to June and a summer honey from July to September, each with its own taste. Their website describes the honey as unprocessed and advises warming crystallised honey to no more than 40°C to keep it as it is.
There is no webshop or delivery. The honey is sold at the canoe rental of Kanocentrum Boerderij Berg on the Langesteeg in Leusden, right next to the museum bunker and the hives, together with beeswax candles and a calendula salve made with their own wax.
The hives are placed in flower-rich, natural areas, and the beekeepers sow flowering field margins and organise local trapping of the Asian hornet, which preys on honeybee colonies.
