Dykhoeve
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
- Pigs and poultry live free range: outdoors on pasture, in woodland or a run
Dykhoeve is a pig and beef farm on the Polderdijk in Herwen, in the Liemers, that sells its own pork and beef from a small farm shop.
The pork is from Duroc pigs, about 220 of them in 2025, which live outside rooting in the river clay. All year they have access to about 25 sown crops, including root crops, grains, grass and clover, and once a day they get a roughage mix; the farm grows its own feed, and the protein it buys in comes only from leftovers of the human food industry. The beef is from Limousin cattle grazing herb-rich meadows, given lucerne grown on the farm in winter. Their website says the animals don't receive routine antibiotics. The range includes soup bones, beef liver, tongue and cheek, pork cheeks and trotters, blood sausage and balkenbrij (a sliceable pork-offal loaf). Almost everything is frozen. Chicken from Kemperkip, which their website describes as organic, is also sold.
The shop is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 15:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:00, and you can reserve meat from the next slaughter. Dry sausage and beef jerky are posted across the Netherlands and Belgium.
The pigs are the farm's workers: the strips they root through are resown regularly to keep the soil covered, and their manure goes straight back onto the fields that grow their feed.
