De Biesterhof is an organic community farm (burgerboerderij) of 25 hectares in the Duffelt, outside Millingen aan de Rijn, growing vegetables, fruit, nuts and beans for weekly boxes and its farm shop.
The farm has been worked since spring 2022 on land leased from Land van Ons, a citizens' cooperative that works to restore landscape and biodiversity. They grow annual crops, fruit and nut trees and herbs together on the same fields, and 10 percent of the land is set aside for nature. The focus is on plant protein such as nuts and beans, and animals have only a supporting role. The farm is certified organic (SKAL); we found the certificate in the register under de Biesterhof C.V. at the farm's address.
Box subscribers receive five to seven kinds of vegetables a week for 30 weeks from early May to the end of November, in three sizes and on a sliding price scale set against income. Boxes are collected at the farm on Fridays from 12:00, and on Tuesdays at De Klispoel in Beek, at the café of the Duurzame Warenhuis in Nijmegen and from a subscriber's front garden in Nijmegen-Oost. Produce is also sold in the farm shop and through the Land van Ons webshop.
Their straw and wheat are traded with a nearby organic dairy farmer for manure, and the farm's leftovers are composted and returned to the fields.
