Lakenvelder Belmermeer is a beef farm on the Waterland side of the Belmermeer, near Broek in Waterland, where a former dairy family has kept a herd of Lakenvelders, an old Dutch cattle breed, since 2022.
The cows and their calves are kept outside as much as possible on pasture of grasses, clover and herbs grown without synthetic fertiliser, and the calves stay with their mothers for at least six months. In winter the cattle are in the barn on the farm's own grass with a minimum of concentrate feed, mainly for minerals. Animals not suited to breeding are slaughtered locally and sold as cuts and meat packages. Besides steaks and roasts there are marrow bones, knuckle, oxtail, shank, soup meat on the bone, heart, liver, tongue and cheeks, and bone broth in 30 and 250 ml packs; kidney fat and eggs from their own Lakenvelder hens are also sold, not yet confirmed.
You order by email, phone or WhatsApp, saying how much of each product you want, and collect at Belmermeer 2, where the farm shop opens Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 13:00 to 19:00, Wednesday from 15:30 and Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00.
The farm breeds the herd to help preserve the Lakenvelder, keeping only animals with an unbroken white belt for breeding.
