Vlaamsch Broodhuys Meent
Vlaamsch Broodhuys Meent is a bakery shop and café in central Rotterdam that sells the sourdough bread Vlaamsch Broodhuys has baked since 1996.
The bread is not baked in the shop but at the company's bakery in Vlaardingen, in stone ovens, and the range runs from the Pain Grand-Mère, the first loaf they made in 1996, and a wholemeal version of it to the Christophe Pavé, alongside croissants, pain au chocolat, tarts and deli products. Spelt, rye and oats are stone-ground in Ouddorp and at the windmills of Schiedam. Whether baker's yeast goes into any of the sourdough loaves is not stated.
The café at Meent 8a was their first in Rotterdam and is open every day from 8:00 to 18:00 for bread, breakfast and lunch, and orders can also be placed online for delivery or pickup.
The wheat is Campremy, an old variety with a low protein content, which means the dough has to rise for much longer than with modern bread wheat.
