- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
Aerderoort Boerenzuivel is a dairy farm on the Barneveldsestraat in Renswoude that turns the milk of its own cows into raw-milk kefir and other dairy for its farm shop.
The kefir is whole, fresh raw milk with a kefir culture of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts added, and that fermentation is the only treatment the milk gets, so it is not pasteurised. The bacteria turn most of the lactose into lactic acid, which gives the kefir its fresh, sour taste, and the yeasts add a light fizz. They also make kefir hangop (strained kefir) and vanilla and chocolate custard (vla), though their website does not say whether these are made from raw milk. The cows graze for at least 120 days a year, six hours a day, and all year they are fed mainly on herb-rich grass from the farm's own land, topped up with bought feed that is GMO-free and grown in Europe.
The farm shop is open on Wednesday from 10:00 to 12:30 and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:30, and orders placed before Tuesday can be collected on Friday or Saturday. Next to their own dairy it sells chicken, beef, eggs, eggnog and cheese from other producers, the cheese from their own dairy cooperative.
The same farm runs a Talentenboerderij, a place where young people aged 14 to 20 learn and work in the shop, the dairy, the garden and with the animals.
