Wachteldonk
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
- Zero waste
Wachteldonk is a dairy farm of about 100 cows on the Arnhemseweg in Renswoude that has sold its raw milk from a milk tap on the farm since 2017.
The milk is not processed, only stirred and cooled, and you tap it yourself from the machine. From spring to autumn, as long as the weather and the pasture allow, the cows go outside for a few hours every day; in the barn they also get grass silage, maize, brewers' grains and pressed sugar-beet pulp, plus concentrate in the milking robot. Every cow on the farm was born there. Now and then one of the dairy cows is slaughtered at a small slaughterhouse in Leersum, and almost all of its meat goes into mince, sold frozen and vacuum-packed in 300 g and 500 g packs and as hamburgers in pairs. A machine next to the tap sells young to old De Graafstroom cheese, which is made at the Deltamilk cooperative dairy that takes the farm's milk.
The milk tap stands in part of the old barn floor and is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 19:00. Reusable glass bottles are for sale there, or you can bring your own, and the cheese machine takes cash, contactless or card. The meat is ordered by email, phone or a Facebook message, while stocks last.
The cows are milked by two robots at times they choose themselves, and they lie in deep-bedded cubicles.
