Appeltje Eitje
- Pigs and poultry live free range: outdoors on pasture, in woodland or a run
Appeltje Eitje Nijmegen is an unmanned farm shop at Groenestraat 261, next to the Kruidvat and Albert Heijn, one of six Appeltje Eitje shops through which two farmers from Dodewaard and Opheusden in the Betuwe sell their own eggs and fruit.
The eggs that count here are the free-range line, from hens that can go outside as well as indoors. The same farm also keeps barn hens in a house with a covered run, and those eggs do not meet our bar, so check which line you are buying. Their website says both flocks get conventional feed and the usual vaccinations, though not the bird-flu vaccine. The Elstar apples and Conference pears are the farmers' own and kept in cold stores on the farm, though how they are sprayed we have not yet confirmed; the cheese, juices, jams, soups and meat products on the shelves are of unstated origin.
The shop is self-service: you order, pay and collect inside, every day from 7:00 to 21:30. Gift packages ordered in the webshop can be collected free in the shop.
The eggs go from the farm to the shops fresh each day, which their website says gives them at least 28 days of shelf life.
