Luxe Rundvlees
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
De Leentjeshoeve is a suckler-cow farm in Horssen, near Druten, where about 40 Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle are bred and raised for the beef sold in its farm shop as Luxe Rundvlees.
All the beef comes from their own cattle, born on the farm, and the calves drink from their mothers for at least five months. Cows and calves graze from spring through autumn and spend the winter in straw-bedded barns; as they grow, the calves also eat grass, grass silage, maize silage and concentrates. The grass comes as far as possible from their own fields, which get the farm's own manure and, when weather and soil allow, artificial fertiliser too. Their website says the herd was awarded two Beter Leven stars in April 2021 and that antibiotics are used only in exceptional cases.
The beef is vacuum-packed and frozen, sold as mixed packages or two-person portions from mince to fillet, along with croquettes made from their own beef. The shop is open Wednesday from 15:00 to 16:30, Friday from 9:30 to 13:00 and Saturday from 9:30 to 16:00; packages can also be ordered online, with delivery in the region by arrangement.
A cow about to calve is moved to a pen beside the herd, so she can give birth in peace while still seeing and touching the others.
