Wholy Bones is a bone-broth maker registered in Arnhem and started in 2022 by two sisters, who simmer beef and chicken bones from farms in the region into a bottled broth for drinking and cooking.
The beef broth is made from bones of grass-fed cattle from their regular supplier Vleesch van Plante in Voorst, which according to their website live outside as much as possible on herb-rich grassland with grass and roughage as the basis of their diet. The chicken broth uses bones of hens that their website describes as organically kept, on organic feed and outside every day, though that farm is not named. Each broth is bones, water, onion, carrot, salt, herbs or spices and four seaweeds, simmered for between six and 48 hours and bottled with the fat left on.
The broth is sold through their webshop in a trial box or packs of eight bottles of 250 or 500 ml, half beef and half chicken, once or as a monthly subscription, delivered nationwide or collected from a pickup point chosen in the cart. Bottles are also stocked at Landwinkel IJsseloord in Arnhem, Boerderijwinkel Den Hoek and De Pantry in Wilp, and Prolokaal and Loka in Apeldoorn.
The fat is left on the broth on purpose: their website holds that bones from animals that have lived well are rich in fat, and that this fat belongs in the cup.
