Kaasboerderij Gein Genoegen is a dairy farm on the river Gein between Abcoude and Driemond that makes farmhouse cheese (boerenkaas) from the milk of its own 40 cows, all of which still have their horns.
The cheese ranges from young grass cheese (graskaas) to old crumbly cheese, plain or flavoured with herbs such as nettle, fenugreek and cumin, and the farm also sells its own fresh whole milk, buttermilk, yoghurt, quark, kefir, hangop (strained yoghurt), custard and butter. The cows are kept in a traditional tie-stall (grupstal) behind the farmhouse and in summer are outside day and night, and the farm grows all their roughage (fresh grass, hay and silage) on its own land. Frozen beef comes from their dual-purpose cows, which spend much of the year outdoors and get no preventive antibiotics, packed for two to four people, with liver, heart, tongue and shank. Pork comes from Bonte Bentheimer pigs living in a wood behind the farm. Eggs and honey are also sold, not yet confirmed as their own.
The farm shop is open Thursday to Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00. Orders can also be placed online through Boeren & Buren and collected on Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Buurderij Amstelkwartier in Amsterdam.
The whey from cheesemaking goes to the pigs, and all the manure from the farm goes back onto its own grassland.
