Kloosterboerderij van Buuren is a beef and pig farm in Horssen, near Druten, that sells the meat of its own animals from its own butchery.
The pigs are Dutch Landrace crossed with Duroc, and they live outside all year with straw-filled huts to shelter in. All are born on the farm, tails are not docked, and the pigs are slaughtered at nine to twelve months; the farm has held the Vijfsterren Varkensboer (five-star pig farmer) award from Varkens in Nood since 2019. The Belgian Blue cattle graze while there is enough grass, winter in a deep-straw barn and spend their final months indoors on a non-GM finishing ration; some are bought in young and raised on. The animals are slaughtered in Druten and boned and cut by hand on the farm. Eggs come from their own hens, which have a run, roam the yard in the afternoons and eat organic feed. Their website calls the vegetable garden organic, but the farm holds no certificate; what qualifies it here is the pigs' year-round outdoor life. Vegetables and bought-in meats went unchecked.
The shop at Kloosterweg 31 is open on Wednesday afternoon, Friday and Saturday. Webshop orders can be collected or delivered, nationwide by arrangement, and the meat is also stocked in Druten, Afferden, Weurt and Bergharen.
When there is blossom, the hives of the VanHier micro-apiary from Maasbommel stand on the farm's land, and the shop sells their honey.
