Stadsboer Jelle
- Organic methods: no synthetic pesticides or fertiliser, not certified
- Agroecological farming
Stadsboer Jelle is a vegetable garden on the Scherpenkampweg at the western edge of Nijmegen, where one grower raises more than 50 kinds of vegetables and herbs for a weekly box scheme.
The garden is worked with a mix of agro-ecological and regenerative methods, which means no synthetic fertiliser, herbicides or insecticides and no fossil-fuelled tractor. Parts of the land are left for insects and birds.
This is a CSA (community-supported agriculture), so instead of buying vegetables one at a time you join as a member for a whole season. From early May to the end of November members receive a box of six different seasonal vegetables each week in one of three sizes, the largest meant for a family. The year's costs fall in spring, so members commit for the season and can only stop early if someone takes over their box. Members choose their own weekly price on a sliding scale above a minimum, and collect the box at the garden or have it brought by cargo bike (bakfiets) within Nijmegen between the Waal and the Maas-Waal canal for a small surcharge. Sign-up is by email, and in October 2026 there was a waiting list.
Nothing is ploughed: the soil is left undisturbed and built up with compost (natuurcompost), so the soil life does the work of loosening it.
