Stadslandbouw Mooieweg is a community garden at Mooieweg 17a in Arnhem-Zuid, where more than 140 volunteers grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers, mostly for the Arnhem food bank.
The garden was laid out in 2014 on a former greenhouse site, and from the start at least half of the harvest has gone to Voedselbank Arnhem and the rest to the volunteers. They describe their growing as organic (biologisch) without holding a certificate; in practice that means no synthetic fertiliser or pesticides, green manures, as little ploughing as possible and a permaculture garden on part of the site. Grassland is left between the beds, and there are hedgerows, a pond, a flower garden, bees, and nest boxes for hedgehogs, birds and bumblebees.
The public can buy on the Zelfoogst Zaterdagen (self-harvest Saturdays), every fortnight from late May to mid October between 13:00 and 15:00, when you harvest and pay for what is in season, such as beetroot, kale and raspberries, with tropical vegetables in summer. Flowers, jams and syrups are sold too, and the range depends on the weather. On other days visitors are welcome whenever the gate is open, but nothing is sold then.
The land is shared with the Dutchmoors flock, whose ewes lamb here at the end of winter and whose grazing keeps the grassland short.
