Waaise Weelde
- Cattle, sheep or goats graze on pasture in the grazing season
- Pigs and poultry live free range: outdoors on pasture, in woodland or a run
Waaise Weelde is a dairy farm of about 120 cows on the Meerndijk in Utrecht, farmed by the third generation, with a self-service farm shop, a milk tap and machines for eggs and frozen meat in its yard.
The milk in the tap comes straight from the farm's own cows and is refilled daily; their website doesn't say whether it is raw or pasteurised. The white eggs come from hens kept in a mobile henhouse (kippenkar) that is moved so they get a fresh patch of grass each time; they forage in the meadow for insects and worms, with a covered run under shade cloth, and roost in the cart at night. The beef is from the farm's dairy cows at the end of a long life, sold frozen as sausages, burgers, steak and entrecôte, and according to their website the cows eat mainly grass from the farm's own meadows. Cheese, potatoes, onions and other dairy are also sold, not yet confirmed as their own.
The shop is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; glass bottles with caps are sold next to the tap, and empty egg boxes can be brought back for reuse.
Because the henhouse moves across the pasture, the hens' manure is spread over the grass as they go, which their website says improves soil life.
