Voedselbos Rijnvliet 30
Voedselbos Rijnvliet is the food forest in the public space of Rijnvliet, a new district of Leidsche Rijn that is Utrecht's first edible neighbourhood, started by residents, the cultural and ecological workspace Metaal Kathedraal and the municipality.
The central food forest lies beside the old orchard next to Metaal Kathedraal, and edible hedges and verges run through the streets. Residents' posts name red, white and black currants, gooseberries, jostaberries and plums by the Lotusvliet playground, raspberries around the Boomkronenpad, and green elderberries and Szechuan pepper, with kiwi berries and honeyberries planted on the east side. Composting is used to close the nutrient loop.
Nothing is sold from the food forest itself; instead the fruit is there to pick, and residents run jam-making and preserving workshops with what they harvest. A residents' scheme, Uw BuurtSuper, has offered weekly bags of vegetables and fruit described as organic and often biodynamic, collected on Wednesday or Thursday from a shed at Metaal Kathedraal, though these are ordered in rather than grown in the forest.
The food forest also links the Strijkviertelplas lake with Park Voorn as a corridor for birds, bats and other wildlife.
