The season for plums

Dutch plums, including greengages and mirabelles, ripen in August and September.

How to choose plums

A little give at the stem end and a bloom on the skin.

Nutrients in plums

Vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium and the polyphenols in the skin; dried plums (prunes) concentrate the fibre and sorbitol.

To get the most: Eat the skin. Stewing keeps the fibre and sorbitol, which is what gives plums their reputation.

Content per NEVO, the Dutch food composition database. This describes what the food contains, not what it does for you.

How to prepare plums

Halve and roast with a little honey, or stew into compote. They do not keep long.

Who sells plums

12 producers in The Field Guide sell plums, according to their own website or shop list, each checked against our inclusion criteria and listed by province. Another 169 growers passed our bar for this food group; we have not yet recorded what each of them grows, so ask them or search the map.
