De Witte Schuur
- Organic methods: no synthetic pesticides or fertiliser, not certified
De Witte Schuur is a care farm in the countryside outside Culemborg, where about 70 young adults and adults with a disability work alongside the farming family and staff in the vegetable garden, the greenhouse, with the animals and in the farm's own patisserie.
The vegetables and fruit are grown in their own kitchen garden and greenhouse without synthetic fertiliser or pesticides, and the participants help sow, raise and tend them. The shop also sells eggs that the farm group collects from the mobile hen house, and lamb, both of which the farm says it produces itself; how the hens and sheep are kept beyond that isn't confirmed yet. Cakes, pies, quiches and biscuits are made by hand in the patisserie without instant mixes. Flour from the mill, jams, juices, dairy, cheese and nuts come from other regional producers and aren't included in our check.
The farm shop is open every day, from 9:00 to 17:30 on weekdays and Saturdays and from 13:00 on Mondays and Sundays, with a tea garden and ice cream parlour in the high season. Patisserie can be ordered online for collection, and an egg subscription gives a punch card for a weekly or fortnightly box of eggs.
Each year the participants and staff decide together what will be grown in the kitchen garden.
