Moestuin Zuylestein is the restored 17th-century walled kitchen garden of the Zuylestein estate between Leersum and Amerongen, which grows vegetables, fruit and herbs for the estate shop in the old orangery.
The garden grows squash, carrots, endive, beans, cabbage, courgettes, Jerusalem artichokes, cavolo nero and potatoes, plus apples, mulberries, medlars, strawberries, berries and espalier fruit from the walls. No synthetic fertiliser or pesticides are used, and their website says the garden is worked the way organic growers work, with organic seed and plants. The estate also keeps outdoor woodland pigs of two old breeds, Bonte Bentheimer and Berkshire, which eat acorns, beech nuts, brambles, roots and surplus vegetables and fruit from the garden; the pork is sold in vacuum-packed portions by order form and collected at the orangery.
The shop and garden are open on Friday and Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00 and on Saturday from 11:00 to 15:00, and on Fridays you can choose vegetables in the garden that are harvested for you on the spot. The orangery and shop close from the end of October 2026 for restoration and are expected to reopen in March 2027.
The beds are never walked on but worked from the paths, and they are fed with compost, green manure and mulches of straw and sheep's wool to keep the soil loose.
