The season for blackberries

Cultivated blackberries fruit from July to October; wild ones along Dutch hedges ripen in August and September.

How to choose blackberries

Plump and fully black. Red drupelets mean underripe.

Nutrients in blackberries

Fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese and anthocyanins.

To get the most: Raw and soon after picking. Seeds carry some of the fibre and omega-3, so no need to sieve them out.

Content per NEVO, the Dutch food composition database. This describes what the food contains, not what it does for you.

How to prepare blackberries

Eat fresh, or cook briefly with apple for a crumble.

Who sells blackberries

17 producers in The Field Guide sell blackberries, according to their own website or shop list, each checked against our inclusion criteria and listed by province. Another 163 growers passed our bar for this food group; we have not yet recorded what each of them grows, so ask them or search the map.
